PRESS RELEASE

ZWIJNDRECHT, the Netherlands, 14 September 2022 – On 13 September, a solar panel installation with a 5 megawatt peak capacity was put into operation at Van Leeuwen Pipe and Tube Group. The official ceremony was performed by the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Jan Peter Balkenende. With this installation comprising 9,100 solar panels on the roof of the warehouse in Zwijndrecht, the Netherlands, Van Leeuwen is taking an important step to reduce its CO2 emissions.

With solar panels covering a total area of 23,500 m2, the international steel pipes distribution company will be able to produce enough electricity to provide green energy to all its branches in the Netherlands and Belgium. In addition, Van Leeuwen Pipe and Tube Group will return sufficient power to the grid for 300 households in the Netherlands.

On 13 September, Prof.Dr. J.P. (Jan Peter) Balkenende, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, officially commissioned the installation, in the presence of employees and guests. The solar photovoltaic installation is part of the sustainability strategy at Van Leeuwen, with one of the most important objectives being the reduction of its CO2 emissions .

Several steps have already been taken. Examples are replacing the lighting in the warehouses by LED and reducing the use of natural gas by over 60%. And in the Netherlands, the Van Leeuwen trucks have started running on HVO100 fuel, making the distribution CO2 neutral. In various other branches in Europe too, projects have been launched to install solar panels on the roofs.

Peter Rietberg, Chairman of the Management Board: "This solar panel installation is an important step towards enabling us to reduce our CO2 emissions. Above all, it is also an important, concrete milestone in improving the sustainability of our distribution operations. For us as a family business with a 98-year history, continuity and the successful transfer to the next generation are crucial. As a leading international company in our industry, we accept our responsibility for carrying out our business operations and growth plans in a sustainable way."
